Place Name
Named after philanthropist John Meredith Esq a local landowner, alderman and a Master of the Worshipful Company of Skinners (known as The Skinners’ Company) who died childless on February 12, 1633. Meredith bequeathed eight acres of land, a field of pasture, to his Company to be put in trust for charitable purposes, chiefly the support of aged freemen of the company and unbeneficed clergymen. Some 200 years later they leased the land to James Whiskin of Clerkenwell, a plumber, painter and glazier by trade, who built this and nearby Whiskin Street in 1824 – 1825.
