Tallis Street, EC4Y

Place Name

Named in 1893 to honour Thomas Tallis (January 30, 1505 – November 23, 1585), the composer and hymn-writer who performed for four monarchs – both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His name is engraved on the façade of a nearby building that had previously been the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, until 1977. The name Tallis is derived from the French word taillis, which means a thicket.
