Place Name
This road was built by Daniel (or possibly his father William) Hagon who named it – or perhaps misnamed it – after his wife Frances (nee Frost) or mother, Frances (nee Dye). Daniel Hagon was born April 2, 1843 in Edgefield, Norfolk, but by the 1860s the family had moved to London, residing in Lambeth. Daniel married Frances, who was born in Rotherham in 1858, in 1881. At some stage the couple had moved to Wimbledon where two of their four children, daughter Alice Maud Mary Hagon born in 1889 and son Harold Ernest Hagon, born 1893, were born. Daniel died in 1917. There was speculation about how Francis Road got its name in an article in the Wimbledon News March 18, 1977.
