Allington Close, SW19

Place Name

At various times called Mutton Alley, Dog & Fox Court, after a nearby inn, and Beehive Buildings, which consisted of rows of small cottages, built back-to-back, housing farm labourers, gardeners, and laundresses. It was renamed Allington Close in 1937 after Allington Lodge in Merton Park. According to an article in the Wimbledon News, published on April 26, 1974, it was so named as the “one time the residence of the owners” of the tenements for the poor. Allington Lodge still stands, at 1 Sheridan Road.
