Place Name
Mary Florence Luttrell, dowager Baroness Westbury (died August 1, 1901), was a daughter of the Reverend Alexander Fownes Luttrell JP of East Quantoxhead, Somerset. In July 1851 she married the Hon Richard Augustus Bethell, who was later to be embroiled in a financial scandal. The Luttrell family had been resident in the west of the county for generations, occupying Dunster Castle, which they bought in 1376. Her son Richard Luttrell Pilkington Bethell, 3rd Lord Westbury, inherited the Leader Estate when his uncle John Temple Leader, who owned large tracts of Putney, died in 1903. As the new owner he wasted no time developing his new acquisition, which his uncle had either leased out for grazing or pasture attached to his and other large houses. Work on Luttrell Avenue began that same year, with a second phase of building completed in 1906.
