Place Name

Literal, it is located on Putney Heath, and has commanding views of the surrounding area. The heath’s isolation made it a popular spot duels, on notable one here was in 1809 which involved the then-future Prime Minister George Canning and his political rival, Lord Castlereagh. In the 18thCentury, a military encampment was set up on the Heath during periods of tension with France. Putney Heath was also used for public executions, but in the 19thCentury, it became a more genteel space, attracting walkers and picnickers. One of the area’s most famous residents was the poet and essayist Leigh Hunt, who lived in a cottage here.
