Place Name
A reference to the historic tree belt in the extensive park of Dover House, which can be clearly seen on 19thCentury Ordnance Survey maps. A coppice is an area of woodland in which the trees or shrubs are periodically cut back to ground level to stimulate growth. This is one of the streets of the Dover House Estate which was developed by William Willett Ltd of Sloane Square, and was designed along garden city principles. Laid out over the western half of the former Putney Park, it was originally called the Roehampton Estate. It was purchased by the London County Council in 1919 and was a split development, with private housing to the south of Crestway and social housing to the north. This street is to the south. Dorian Gerhold in Putney and Roehampton Past notes: “Many of the existing features of the site were retained, including Putney Park House, Putney Park Lane, the Footpath and numerous trees.”
