Stanford’s map of 1864 clearly shows how marshy and wet the Wandle Delta used to be. North of Wandsworth High Street the River Wandle used to divide into three branches, with marshy islands separating them, home to many osier trees, which were used in basket weaving and other home goods. A causeway was needed for the workers at the water powered flour mills at the heart of the delta to get to and from work, which became known simply as The Causeway. Reaching to the other bank, it is effectively the last bridge across the Wandle before it meets the Thames.
