Burntwood Lane, SW17

Place Name

Early maps show that Burntwood Lane predated Burntwood Grange which stood between Wandsworth Common and Garratt Lane for nearly a century. The house was built around 1832, but a map from around the turn of the century clearly shows the road marked as Burntwood Lane. I fact the name was first recorded here in the 17thCentury but why the wood was burnt, most likely either to clear the area or for the manufacture of charcoal has not been passed down to us. The area was developed between the wars.
