Arcadia Close, SM5

Place Name

Laid out over former allotment gardens. This is a common enough name used by developers hoping to capture the area’s former pastoral nature – although ironically with an iron works and chemical works nearby, this was one of the most industrial of areas in Carshalton. The term Arcadia is derived from the Greek province of the same name which dates to antiquity; the province’s mountainous topography and sparse population later caused the word Arcadia to develop into a poetic byword for an idyllic vision of unspoiled wilderness. The street was laid out sometime in the late 1990s early nougties. A rather lazy and unimaginative name.
