Place Name
The southern section from Thames Road to Ernest Gardens was originally a path called Dead Donkey Lane which meandered though an orchard behind one Strand on the Green’s malthouses. The Dead Donkey was, quite literally, dropped and the new more buyer friendly name – probably after a local tree – installed when the area was developed in the first half of the 20thCentury.
