Place Name
Previously called Church Street, it is named after George Fournier, whose family had been Huguenot refugees forced to flee France under persecution from the Catholic church. The Fourniers settled in the area near the street in the 18thCentury and when George died in 1834 he left a bequest for the poor of Spitalfields.
