Along with Elizabeth Way, Castle Way, Moat Side, Queens Way, Seymour Gardens, Shakespeare Way and Raleigh Way, this is one of a cluster of local streets commemorating Hanworth Castle, a royal Tudor hunting lodge where Queen Elizabeth I (September 7, 1533 – March 24, 1603), hence the name, spent part of her childhood and sometimes stayed during her reign. Though this could also be her mother, Catherine Parr, who as the sixth wife of Henry VIII inherited the castle upon the king’s death in 1544 and lived there for some time until her own death in 1548. After burning down the property was rebuilt on its present day site, the now derelict Hanworth Park House, in 1797. Before its development in the mid-20thCentury this land was fields just south of the original fortification.
