Place Name
Originally St John’s Grove – although both spellings appear to be used. This was laid out as part of the development of the Clarence estate some time after 1830. It used to be much longer running in a straight line from Kew Road to Kew Foot Road but with the coming of the Great Chertsey Road (A316) in 1933, the street was dramatically cutback to the stub it is today. As for the name, it made a great deal more sense before being curtailed. It is a reference to the Church of St John the Divine, in Kew Road, which was completed in 1831 on land provided by the Selwyn family. The name was confirmed by the Vestry, the prototype parish council, in 1842.
