Place Name
Not named after the characters from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, but unusually after two neighbours, Dr Hamilton Bell and Gaston de Chalus. In the mid-1970s Dr Bell sold land on the grounds of 168 Kew Road, on the corner of Stanmore Road, to a developer. They in turn put in an application to build high-rise flats and cut down some mature trees. The proposals galvanised the neighbours into a fierce opposition, their most energetic spokesman was de Chalus, who ironically was a developer himself. The planning committee was swayed by the objections and the high-rise never went ahead, although this cul-de-sac was laid out. Someone, obviously had a sense of humour and perhaps as a joke named this new road after the two principle players in 1977.
