Place Name
Henry Hobart, brother of the Earl of Buckingham, was a Justice of the Peace who in 1772 led local residents’ opposition to plans to build a timber bridge across the River Thames, instead they proposed a stone crossing approached from Water Lane. This idea was thwarted by the landowner refusing to allow access to the bridge on the Twickenham side. The stone bridge was however built on the present site. This road is part of the Queen’s Road estate which was developed by the Richmond Parish Lands Charity. Hobart House, which was Hobart’s residence on Petersham Road, is nearby. For a time it was known as Ivy Hall, it later became the Hobart Hall Hotel.
