Place Name
This road was named in 1884, the same year that Basutoland (present day Lesotho), in southern Africa, became a Crown colony. Ruled by the unpopular Cape Colony from 1871, the chieftain of the Basotho (then known as Basuto) people, Moshoeshoe I, wrote to the British asking to come under their protection and control. This was agreed and the country remained as part of the British Empire until October 4, 1966 when it was renamed the Kingdom of Lesotho. It was not uncommon for patriotic developers to name streets after world events and successes from across the British Empire.
