Named after the Derby winner, Ladas a thoroughbred racehorse and sire. His career attracted an unusual amount of attention as his owner, Lord Rosebery, became Prime Minister at the height of his success. In a career that lasted from 1893 to 1894, Ladas ran eleven times and won seven races. The name Ladas, derived from that of Alexander the Great’s messenger, had previously been used by Lord Rosebery’s father for a horse who ran unplaced in the 1869 Derby. The horse’s victory at the 1894 Epsom Derby was received with “immense enthusiasm”, and completed a three-part prediction made by Rosebery as a student at Oxford University: that he would marry an heiress, become Prime Minister, and win the Derby. He was retired as a four-year-old following training problems and was put out to stud. This street was laid out later than the adjacent ones.
