Place Name

Agricultural heritage, this was once part of the Mortlake Common Field. Charles Hailstone in Alleyways of Mortlake and East Sheen writes: “In medieval times the gently watered earth between the river and [Kew Meadows] path provided meadow for the lord of the manor and his tenants. After haymaking it would have been customary for cattle to be turned in from Lammas, the first day of August, through October when the meadows were closed for the next year’s grass to grow/ Going from Chiswick Bridge along the waterside were Church Lot, Kocke Meade (named from its shape), Town Meade (hence Townmead Road), LordsMeade (lord of the manor), and Short Lot, the last along the path.” This road was laid out in 1927.
