Place Name
Originally Chapel Street it was changed to the present name during the London County Council’s reordering of street nomenclature between 1936 and 1938, in which many generic names were renamed. William Rutley Mowll (1874 – 1948) was the vicar of Christ Church, who oversaw the works of the Art Nouveau and Byzantine Revival Grade II* listed building built in 1902 following the demolition of the old church in 1899. It was designed by Arthur Beresford Pite, Mowll’s brother-in-law. Mowll was the son of Edward Worsfold Mowll, a solicitor based in Dover, Kent, and Mary Kingsford. Basil Mowll who was the curate when William left, replaced him as vicar.
