Henry Oliver Duncan Davidson (1854 – 1915) was a master at Harrow School for 46 years and who ran a Small House, accommodation for around 15 young students. It was here on April 17, 1888, a young Winston Churchill was to stay when he joined the school. This headstrong body remained only a year before being transferred, as was always planned, to the headmaster’s own house. Davidson was an Old Harrovian himself and, was a keen player of games and a kindly schoolmaster. He was Churchill’s tutor for most of his time at Harrow, even after the boy had moved to the Head Master’s House. His second son, Donald, was Churchill’s Attorney General during Second World War, and ended his judicial career as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.
