Place Name
Originally called Dirty Lane, which was a literal description since it led to the Wealdstone or Greenhill sewage farm. When the Elmgrove estate began to be developed between the wars for residential housing, a new name was needed – and sewage farm moved. Elmgrove, may have been a reference to a former woodland but there is little evidence of it being there in the period prior to building – instead it was given a rustic-sounding name, meant to attract residents with a suggestion of semi-rurality.
