Place Name
Alnwick Abbey was founded as a Premonstratensian monastery in 1147 by Eustace fitz John in Northumberland. It was dissolved in 1535, refounded in 1536 and finally suppressed in 1539. All that remains today is the impressive 14thCentury gatehouse. Like many of the roads on the St Helier’s estate this is named after British monasteries and abbeys in remembrance of the area’s historic ownership by Westminster Abbey. The road names are in alphabetical order, of which Aberconway Road in the north west of the estate is first.
