Place Name
Somewhat confusingly, this is at the southern edge of Tooting Common. In fact, this does make sense historically as it was laid out sometime between the wars along the northern boundary of Streatham Park, the former 100 acre estate of the Thrale family, which was probably the most famous of Streatham’s estates. It was the 18thCentury home of the Thrales, a family of wealthy Southwark brewers. The house was built and the estate laid out in 1739 by Ralph Thrale on the site of a medieval house called Moorfields. Part of the nearby common land was enclosed to lay out the estate.
