Berkeley Place, SW19

Place Name

Takes its name from Edward Berkeley Phillips (February 2, 1839 – January 8, 1908), a member of the wealthy Mansel baronets, who owned land at Wimbledon. He was not allowed to take the surname Mansel, nor become the 12th baronet Mansel of Muddlescombe in Carmarthenshire, because it was long thought he was illegitimate. Instead the title went to his cousin Courtenay Cecil Mansel. However, in 1903 it was discovered that the first marriage of their grandparents in Scotland (there was a later one in England) was not invalid as had been thought and that Colonel Edward Berkeley Phillips (he changed his name to Mansel), should have succeeded to the title in 1883. When Edward Mansel died without children, Courtenay Mansel once again succeeded to the baronetcy.
