John Aylmer (1521 – June 3, 1594) was the Bishop of London from 1576 up until his death. He was one of the biggest supporters of Elizabeth I’s right to the throne and helped develop some of the earliest constitutional writings explaining the English system of Government, in particular the so-called mixed state, writing “the king or queen, which representeth the monarchy; the noble men which be the aristocracy; and the burgesses and knights the democracy.” In 1558, he declared that: “God is English.” This is one of a number of roads that was built across part of Hornsey Great Park which belonged to the bishops of London. There is also an Aylmer Road in Hammersmith, which manor the bishops also held.
