Place Name
AJ Hutching & Company were a firm of wirerope makers who were previously located in the southern half of Hutching’s or Hutching Wharf in the 19thCentury. It had been part of a wirerope and engineering works set up in 1839–41 by Andrew Smith, whose premises, acquired in stages, had also included the ropery to the south. It was previously called Providence Place but changed to the present name in 1859.
