Holcombe Road, IG1

Place Name

Holcombe Ingleby (March 18, 1854 – August 6, 1926) was the son of the last private resident of the Valentines Estate, local philanthropist, Sarah Ingleby. After studying history at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, he became a lawyer and later a Conservative MP for King’s Lynn, where he also served as Mayor. Following his mother’s death he donated more land to local causes but he was never interested in maintaining the estate, which he sold to Ilford Council in 1912, preferring to spend his time in his wife’s native Norfolk. A few years earlier however, he found himself as a defendant in charge of bribing voters ahead of the December 1910 election, having thrown large and lavish parties for locals and giving gifts of game to the guests. He was cleared and declared duly elected to the seat which he held until 1918. He died at Sedgeford Hall, Norfolk, at the age of 72.
