William Arthur Tooke (died 1884) was a country squire and Justice of the Peace who lived at Pinner Hill House. The house had been bought by his grandfather, William Tooke, who left it to his son Arthur William Tooke who carried out much of the furnishing inside the house, installing dark oak panelling in the dining room and a Victorian liver-coloured fireplace as well as adding the Victorian Wing to the property. Arthur William died in 1871 and left it to his son who was noted for his care towards his local community, paying for, among other things the restoration of the parish church of St John in 1880. When he died a fountain was erected with an inscription which reads: “I was thirsty and ye gave me drink.” The house was in turn passed to his only sister Alice Hesham Jones, who sold it in 1903 to Samuel Dore, whose death in 1919 brought about the development that was to create the Pinner Hill Estate.
