Among the achievements of James Clerk Maxwell (June 13, 1831 – November 5, 1879) was proving that electric and magnetic fields travel through space as waves moving at the speed of light. He was voted the third greatest physicist of all time, behind only Newton and Einstein. Like the other streets nearby, this one was laid out over the site of the old Croydon B power station, in Valley Park Croydon where the roads have a connection with the development of electricity. The others include: Ampere Way, Faraday Way, Franklin Way, Kelvin Gardens, and Volta Way.
