The Reverend William Lance was appointed as master of Harrow School and registered in the Governors’ Order-book, when it moved into its new building in 1615 (the west wing of the present Old Schools). His brother Thomas was appointed as usher, while the first recorded pupil was the son of a vicar. On his resignation in 1621 he took up the vicarage of Harrow and became the private chaplain to Lord North.
