Woodfield Drive, EN4

Place Name

As it says, this takes its name from a former field name, Woodyfield, which was once part of the Everley Lodge estate. It was developed in 1935. It presumably took its name due to proximity to trees. In pre-industrial, agrarian England, wood was the single most versatile and essential raw material, underpinning almost every aspect of daily life and economic activity. Before the widespread adoption of coal and imported materials, timber and other woodland products were the primary sources of fuel for heating and cooking, sustaining households, industries, and agriculture alike. Charcoal, made from wood, was vital for metalworking, including blacksmithing and early iron production, while ash and other by-products were used in soapmaking and glassmaking. Beyond energy, wood was indispensable in construction: it framed houses, barns, mills, carts, ploughs, and fencing, and supplied the material for tools, furniture, and domestic utensils.
