Industrial heritage. In 1865 the London Jute Works opened on Duck Lees Lane, Ponders End bringing with it many labourers from the jute mills from Scotland. Here under dreadful conditions and for poor pay they made twine, rope, matting and sacks from the fibrous material. The works did not last long after the firm went bankrupt in 1882. Four years later the redundant mill was bought by the Edison and Swan United Electric Light Co Ltd, better known as Ediswan, which moved its production of electric light bulbs to the site, later adding radio values.
