Agricola Place, EN1

Place Name

Named after Gnaeus Julius Agricola (June 13, 40 – August 23, 93), the general responsible for much of the Roman conquest of Britain. It was during his time in Britain that Ermine Street, one of the great Roman highways which used to run through Enfield, was completed. This is one of a small cluster of roads that are connected with this route, see also Ermine Side, Hadrians Ride, Lincoln Road and Roman Way. Built on the site of what was Fourth Avenue. In 1974 Enfield Council compulsorily purchased properties north of Main Avenue and demolished Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, and Seventh Avenue to develop a new housing estate. As a result extensive Roman remains were discovered and the new cul-de-sacs were given Roman-related names.
