Directional, the road leading to Hale End. The settlement after which this road is named was first recorded as Hale in 1285, it comes from the Old English word halh meaning a nook of land in a river bend. For a while in the 16thCentury it was also called Wooddend (Wood End) and by the middle of the 17thCentury it was being referred to as Woodend otherwise Halesend.
