Place Name
Named after Adam de Salesbury and his ancestors who took possession of a large part of Higham manor in 1336. He bought it from Alexander de Balliol and William le Plumer, who themselves had inherited it via their respective wives some years earlier. De Salesbury, or Adam de Sarum as he was also known, was a wealthy spice dealer from Salisbury. He died at a relatively young age and left his Walthamstow manor to his son, Thomas. When he died in 1370, Thomas left a son Paul Salesbury, who in his youth was an unpleasant tearaway. During the Peasants’ Revolt, he seized the opportunity of taking possession of several people’s homes and wrecking them. He was later pardoned.
