Place Name
Named after Gerard Manley Hopkins (July 28, 1844 – June 8, 1889), a poet and Jesuit priest, who was born in Stratford. The two major themes of his work were nature and religion. Although largely ignored in his lifetime, he gained posthumous admiration for his original style and rhythm, influencing such leading 20thCentury poets as TS Eliot, Dylan Thomas, WH Auden, Stephen Spender and Cecil Day-Lewis.
