Place Name
Named after Sir Henry Tate (March 11, 1819 – December 5, 1899), whose sugar refinery at Silvertown is close by. Tate made his fortune from almost nothing, starting as a grocery shop apprentice, he had his own store within seven years. But it was his business deal to buy the patent for sugar cubes that made his fortune. In 1877 he opened a refinery at Silvertown, which remains in production until this day. Not only was Tate a successful businessman he also a generous benefactor, giving money and art works to fund Tate Britain among many other projects.
