Sir Donald George Bradman, (August 27, 1908 – February 25, 2001), nicknamed The Don, was an Australian international cricketer and widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. Over a 20 year career he played in 52 test matches and made 117 centuries with a first class average of 99.94 runs. His score of 452 not our against Queensland in 1929 was a record for 29 years. Following the Second World War he made a dramatic comeback, captaining an Australian team known as The Invincibles on a record-breaking unbeaten tour of England. Almost 50 years after his retirement as a Test player, in 1997, Prime Minister John Howard of Australia called him the “greatest living Australian”. This is one of a cluster of roads named after famous cricketers and sportspeople. It was laid out over Public Transport’s Burnt Ash Sports Ground. Nearby streets include Botham Close; Brearley Close; Compton Close; Grace Close; Gatting Close; Hutton Row; and Trueman Close.
