Gascoyne Road, E9

Place Name

Named after Sir Crisp Gascoyne (1700 – December 28, 1761), a wealthy brewer who lived in Gravel Lane, Houndsditch. Gascoyne became the first Lord Mayor of London to live in the Mansion House. Earlier in his career, while he was an Alderman, Sir Crisp had helped to get the John Cass school reopened, and then became the first Treasurer of the Cass Foundation. One of three roads in the area named after former treasurers of the foundation. See also Annis Road and Christie Road, both E9.
