Place Name

Named after Daniel Asher Alexander (May 6, 1768 – March 2, 1846), architect and surveyor of the London Dock, which was completed in 1805, having been granted a 21 year monopoly in handling tobacco, rice, wine and brandy. He had previously been the principal architect of Dartmoor and Maidstone Prisons. From 1796 until 1831 he was surveyor to the London Dock Company responsible for all the buildings at the London Docks, including the Pennington Street Warehouses and the London Dock House.
