Montgomery Way, CR8

Place Name

One of seven streets named after “Kenley’s Few” RAF officers stationed at the nearby airfield who lost their lives during the Battle of Britain during World War Two. Named after Cecil Robert Montgomery (1914 – August 14, 1940) who was born in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. In February 1940 he was confirmed and graded as a pilot officer. After serving in France he was transferred to Kenley air base but less than three months later was shot down over the Channel, off Dover, Kent, while intercepting a raid over Dover. The street sign – like all seven – has the rare distinction of a brief history of his life.
