Place Name
One of a cluster of roads commemorating leading military figures who took part in imperial campaigns. Named after the controversial Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (June 24, 1850 – June 5, 1916), a senior British Army officer who played a central role in the early part of the First World War. He is best known as the face of the recruiting poster extolling men that: “Your country needs you.” In this context however it was for his part in the Second Boer War where he adopted a scorched earth policy against the enemy and established the first concentration camps. Nearby roads are named Hunter Road, Buller Road, and Milner Road.
