Place Name
First recorded before the Norman invasion as Crop tunes gemœro in the Anglo-Saxon charter of AD973. The name Crofton, comes from two Old English words cropp meaning a rounded hill and tün, a farmstead. The addition of gemœro means that it was on a boundary. The name continued to be used after the conquest featuring in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Croctvne but adopted the modern spelling as early as 1240.
