Place Name
One of three roads named after neighbouring counties. Surrey, Kent and Sussex. Until the London Government Act 1963, which came into effect two years later, Bromley was in the county of Kent, bordered by Surrey and Sussex. West Wickham stood on the Surrey border. Perhaps to avoid confusion Kent’s other adjoining neighbour London (Essex being across the Thames) was not named, with a fourth street being named North Road. Despite their rather grand names the roads are small residential streets not major routes. They were originally homes built for the working class servicing the grand manors in the area.
