Place Name
Named after Roger Forde or Roger of Ford, the unpopular medieval Abbot of Glastonbury, Somerset, who died unexpectedly while visiting the Bishop of Rochester’s Palace at Bromley in October 1261. Roger had caused controversy in Glastonbury with expensive appeals to hold on to the job after he was deposed. Although he won his case the debts caused problems for the monks. It has been suggested that Roger was killed on October 6, 1261, in Bromley but that is not borne out by contemporary accounts.
