Place name
Built on land left to the Ironmonger’s Company whose coat of arms features a helmet. In 1527 Thomas Mitchell left “a crofte of lande, yt ios by estimacon tenne acres, now divided into gardens and builded with tenements, situate in Old Streete.” This area was developed with names referencing to the Company and its benefactor in the 18thCentury. The Ironmongers is ranked 10th in precedence among the Great Twelve Livery Companies of the City of London. Its coat of arms embodies various iron and steel objects, with two salamanders as a crest, medieval salamanders reputedly being able to survive fire. Salamanders, as supporters, were granted in 1923, although they had been used before then.
