Place name
Named after San Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, which was a source of mahogany. Mahogany is the national tree of the Dominican Republic. This is one of a cluster of streets connected with the timber trade, the others include Memel Street, Timber Street, Sycamore Street, Honduras Street, Baltic Street East and Baltic Street West. The land was bought by a timber merchant Thomas Hacker in 1808 who named them after trade-related activities, they were laid out in 1809.
