Crusoe Road, CR4

Place Name

A reference to the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe who is said to have lived for a time at nearby Tooting Old Hall. The unsubstantiated Defoe claim did at least produce a better link in the Crusoe Farm Dairy, set up appropriately enough by a descendant of the explorer Captain James Cook, one Elizabeth Taylor. Within a few years she built up one of the largest milk businesses in South London. Other nearby roads connected with the Defoe novel are Friday Road, Island Road and Pitcairn Road.
