Place name
Named after the Chequers Inn whose sign was a chequerboard, which was recorded here in 1665. In the Middle Ages the chequer emblem signified a money-changer, who used a board divided into squares, called an exchequer to make his calculations. The money-changer usually ran a tavern as a side-line to keep coins flowing back into their own pockets. It also appears in the coat of arms of the Earl of Warenne who, with his successors, the earls of Arundel, had the right to grant beer-selling licences.
